Why are we hosting this event?

According to a survey conducted in Portland Public Schools, approximately 27% of high school students report drinking alcohol in the past 30 days. We know that activities focused on encouraging parents to speak with their children about substances and substance use, are highly effective in reducing the risks of tobacco, alcohol and illicit drug use. This event will not only encourage families to discuss these topics, but provide tools and support to have those conversations in a safe and productive manner.

CONFERENCE INFORMATION

Big Village is a community-based coalition working to reduce youth and young adult substance use in the Portland area through: Education, Engagement, and Advocating for policies and community norms that promote health and wellbeing. Our team is thrilled to be hosting our first annual Prevention Rocks Conference. This is an event for families that will help to demystify the “drug talk” and encourage families to build upon and strengthen their communication and coping skills.

What’s going to happen at the event?

  • A No Prom Drama station, hosted by Panda the Llama, where teens can create their own “Prom Survival kits”, and take a photo with Panda
  • Session workshops for parents/teens focused on adolescent brain development, how to help a friend or family member in need, and how to have “the talk” more effectively
  • Resource Fair with vendors and partner agencies across the Portland-Metro region
  • Craft and other fun activities for younger attendees
  • Lunch!
